Are gorillas aggressive? All Gorilla types can be aggressive, especially when they feel threatened by humans. However, they are usually peaceful primates and aggression is usually only seen when they are protecting their young, or fighting for food, and defending their territory.

Zoos and other places where gorillas are kept in captivity are where most incidents involving gorillas and humans happen. Due to habitat loss, hunting and bushmeat, some gorillas tend to be stressed and can attack anyone on sight. It should be noted, however, that gorillas pose a very small threat to humans when they are allowed to live in their natural habitat. It’s true that many gorillas have gotten used to human presence in the wild thanks to efforts made by conservationists in Bwindi Forest National Park , Volcanoes National park and Virunga National Park in Congo.

The habituation process takes a long time, but it can result in friendly gorillas. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, and Rwanda all offer gorilla trekking experiences for visitors. Such gorilla treks give visitors a chance to see mountain gorillas in the jungle while at the same time raising much needed funds to protect these endangered dapibus leo.

gorillas in Rwanda

Sudden movements and noises: While in the jungles, gorillas can easily be annoyed by people who make sudden movements and noises. This can make them threatened and can easily attack you. Make sure you keep calm and avoid sudden movements even when a gorilla approaches you. I know its hard but try.

Being too close to the gorillas: It is not recommended to get too close to Mountain gorillas or lowland gorillas. Just like any other animals, gorillas can be unpredictable and may attack you if they feel threatened in their territory. It is important to keep a safe distance of about 7 meters. By doing this, you will avoid a punch from a silverback.

Maintaining Eye Contact with gorillas:  Keeping an eye contact with a gorilla must be avoided at all times as it can be seen as a sign of aggression and challenging the authority of the silverback in some cases. If you are interested in observing gorillas in the wild, it is best to maintain a distance from them and avoid direct eye contact.

Follow the gorilla trekking rules: Guides are knowledgeable about gorillas and other wildlife animals, their habits, and the environment, and they know how to keep people and gorilla attacks safe. Following the rules from your guide will mean that you are respecting the boundaries and not disturbing wildlife. And you are helping to preserve natural habitat.

What to do if a gorilla gets aggressive?

If you encounter a gorilla in the wild that charges you, the best thing to do is to stay calm and back away slowly. Do not make a loud noise and run away because it is not possible to outrun gorillas.

What are the different types of gorillas?

There are two gorillas types: eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei) and western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). The eastern gorillas are divided into two subspecies: lowland and mountain.
