Behind the Scenes Tours in Akagera National Park
Take a ‘Behind-the-Scenes’ tour of the park headquarters and meet some of the personnel involved in park administration to learn more about Akagera, including conservation developments inside the park. This activity is available to the public (with a minimum number of participants), however it is intended for educational groups or special interest travelers. Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s sole savannah-type national park, located in the north east of the country along the Tanzanian border, about three hours’ drive from Kigali. Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s oldest national parks, having been established in 1934.
The Akagera National Park is well-known for its magnificent and diverse landscape, which includes classic African grassland, forested hills, and bird-rich waterways. During safaris, you can see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, impala, and elk, as well as the rare roan antelope. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the scarce and towering shoe-caged craftsman among the papyrus greenery on Lake Ihema’s shores.

You’ll also get to meet the park’s anti-poaching squad, which consists of a handful of trainers and about 12 dogs developed specifically to track poachers.
When the dogs detect the poachers, they bark and create a circle around them, trapping them in place until park officials arrive and make an arrest. It’s an enthralling procedure, and the rangers are clearly proud of their well-trained canine colleagues.
