Tips for creating a unforgatable Uganda Self Drive safari trip

Crafting an unforgettable Uganda self-drive journey requires a delicate balance of planning and spontaneity. Here are some valuable tips to infuse your itinerary with both adventure and relaxation:

1. Slow Travel

   – Some guests tend to rent cars for 5 days and try to do activities that should instead be done in 15 days. Resist the urge to constantly be on the move; allow yourself to savor each destination.

   – Allocate at least two nights at each location, especially if you’ve chosen a charming lodge   – some are destinations in themselves.

2. Flexibility is Key

   – Unexpected twists can add charm to your journey; build flexibility into your Uganda self drive safari plan.

   – Overloaded itineraries lead to rushed driving, speeding, and fatigue – hazardous elements that can compromise safety.

3. Mindful Driving on Flight Days:

   – Avoid intense driving schedules on days when you have flights to catch.

   – A relaxed approach reduces stress, and our reliable road support is always there to assist, though it requires time and coordination.

4. Diversify Your Activities

   – National park activities can be demanding; balance wildlife drives with leg-stretching walks, hikes, or cultural experiences.

   – For inspiration, explore our blog on the best things to do in Uganda.

5. Blend Camping with Lodges:

   – Add variety to your stay by mixing between camping and lodge accommodations.

   – Explore basic public campgrounds within national parks and commercial campgrounds outside with modern amenities.

   – Opt for locally-owned guesthouses for an authentic experience, complementing stays in upmarket foreign-owned lodges.

6. Don’t drive at night

Roads in Uganda are often poorly lit, while those outside of cities and towns are rarely lit at all. To add to these already not ideal driving conditions, many animals are active at night  – and are difficult to spot in the dark. For example, antilopes have a habit of jumping into headlights. So for these reasons, we strongly advise to not drive at night and to plan a trip of daytime drives.
