Lake Muhazi Rwanda

Lake Muhazi is located about 40 kilometers east of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city, and has a beautiful winding shoreline worth exploring on your Rwanda Safari, especially on weekends. The area surrounding the lake has a charming relaxed atmosphere, making it the ideal place to escape the busy and noisy life of the city. Long and shallow, Lake Muhazi twists and turns its way through a flooded valley for more than 40km before reaching its eastern shore, not far from the northern exit of eastern Rwanda’s crown jewel, Akagera National Park.

Lake Muhazi is a long, shallow lake that extends through a flooded valley for a long distance to reach its eastern lake shore, which is close to the renowned Akagera Park. The road leading to Nyagatare passes close to the lake’s eastern shore, making it a pleasant stopover for anyone traveling along this route. You can even stop for lunch or simply enjoy the cool breeze on the eastern shore of Lake Muhazi before continuing your journey.

The lakeshore is lined with several traditional villages as well as local bars that play live music, so stopping by any of these will allow you to see how the locals in that area spend their leisure time. You could also spend some time observing the various waters along the shores, or you could go fishing. Several streams meandering from Lake Muhazi feed into the vast expanse dominated by agricultural villages. You can easily traverse the dirty dumpy road which is less traveled in a 4X4 safari vehicle and see the beautifully terraced farmlands on the hillsides that drop down to the edge of the water. This drive offers stunning views of the lake.

There are two large towns near this lake: Gahini and Rwesero, both of which have several guesthouses from which you can organize a variety of water activities such as fishing, boat rides, and bird watching.
