Situated along the Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Bisoke is a dormant  volcano within the Virunga Mountains of  East Africa.

Standing at an elevation of 3,711 meters. Mount Bisoke is part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift system located in Volcanoes National Park. Mount Bisoke is in the park which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a home to mountain gorillas. The area is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mount Bisoke hikes are popular among tourists coming for Rwanda safaris and gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Due to its location within the Virunga ranges and Volcanoes National Park, visitors need to obtain a permit before climbing Mount Bisoke.

How much does Mount Bisoke Hiking Permit cost?

Mount Bisoke hiking permits are required for anyone wishing to summit the Bisoke Volcano. The Rwanda development board is responsible for issuing these permits and can be easily organized by your local travel agent

The permit fee for a one-day hike on Mount Bisoke is $75 for Foreigners, $65 for Foreign residents in Rwanda, Rwandan citizens RWF 4000 , East African citizens pay $55 while East African Foreign residents pay $65

Requirements for the Bisoke Hiking permit, Terms and Conditions for the Bisoke Hike

  • Visitors must report to the Visitor Information/Registration Center at the Volcanoes National Park entrance at 07h00.
  • Rwandan and East African Foreign Residents must have had a work permit or residency status for at least four consecutive months to qualify for the Rwandan/East African Foreign Resident status and discounts.
  • In the case of a diplomat with a resident visa, his spouse and legally accepted children may utilize the resident rates, even though they do not possess a resident visa (live outside Rwanda).
  • All East African member states residents must provide their passports or East African residents permits before the hike
  • Those with one Rwandan parent and a Rwandan spouse are considered Rwandans if confirmed by Immigration and Emigration Director General.
  • In order to hike Bisoke Mountain, you must be at least 15 years old.
  • Each group of hikers will be limited to a maximum of sixteen (16) people.
  • At the time of booking and payments, full details of the client (name, passport, email, phone) must be provided
  • Bookings and Reservations of the Bisoke Hiking permit will be processed on a first come first serve basis
  •  It can be an amazing experience to hike Mountain Bisoke, but it can also be tough, especially if you’re not in shape.

Dian established the Karisoke Research Center between Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi. Her research on mountain gorillas helped to change the views of scientists and gaining international attention for the conservation of these beautiful primates. Her dedication to protect the gorillas costed her life as she was murdered in 1985.
