5 Days Nyerere and Mikumi Safari Overview

Enjoy a classic Tanzania safari in Tanzania’s most popular national parks in the Tanzania southern safari circuit. Starting and concluding in Dar es Salaam, this safari takes you to the Greater Selous Ecosystem, giving you the unique opportunity to see true African wildness in one of Tanzania’s remaining pristine locations. On this 5-day Tanzania safari, explore Africa’s largest and most pristine protected area, which is home to hundreds of different kinds of animals and birds. The wildlife viewing experience in Mikumi National Park is equally unique and cannot be compared to the parks in northern Tanzania, which are overcrowded with tourists. This safari will allow you to enjoy this lonely African nature while enjoying game drives, boat cruises, and safari walks, you name it. You will be accompanied by experienced guides and armed rangers, plus a few other tourist vehicles or not.   

5 Days Nyerere and Mikumi Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Dar-es-salaam to Nyerere National Park

Today, you will be picked up from Dar es Salaam International Airport or your hotel by our company representative and driven to Nyerere National Park in a 4×4 safari vehicle. The journey to Nyerere is about 4 hours and on arrival, you will check into your lodge and have a well-cooked lunch. Relax at your lodge and in the afternoon, embark on your first excursion – a boat safari along the Rufiji River at Nyerere National Park.

Flowing through Nyerere National Park to the Indian Ocean, the River is one of the park’s most fascinating features, home to a variety of Nile crocodiles, hippos, and an array of aquatic birds. The river is a major source of water in the park and also attracts plenty of land mammals that come to drink water and relax by the river banks. After about 2 to 3 hours of game viewing along the Rufigi River, return to your lodge and have dinner. Overnight stay at Selous Wilderness Camp (Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

5 Days Nyerere and Mikumi Safari

Day 2: Nyerere National Park

Today, you will wake up early and have breakfast at 06:30 am before heading out for your full day of game viewing which includes the morning and afternoon game drives. Nyerere National Park is widely regarded as the greatest off-the-beaten-path wildlife safari option away from the masses. The Game Reserve is Africa’s biggest and is home to several wild animals and bird species. in the comfort of your 4×4 open roof safari vehicle, enjoy the opportunity to spot lions, leopards, giraffes, elephants, hippos, impalas, hartebeests, pythons, and elands, as well as the uncommon wild dogs. With luck, you will be able to observe these magnificent hunters of the African wilderness.

Unlike in northern Tanzania, where animals and birds are more accustomed, animals here are more fearful. Moreover, Nyerere National Park contains over 400 distinct bird species reported. You will take a lunch break after the first game drive of the day which is likely to take 3 to 4 hours. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, relax a little, and resume in the late afternoon for more game viewing, after which you will return to your lodge and relax. Day 3: Nyerere to Mikumi National Park

After breakfast, you’ll go on a guided walking safari with two armed rangers for protection. Enjoy a 2-hour safari walk adventure as you get up close and personal with wildlife and the park’s spectacular ecosystems. Head back to your lodge after and set off for Mikumi National Park, located north of Nyerere National Park with en-route lunch. You will arrive in Mikumi in the late afternoon and drive straight to your lodge for check-in. You can choose between spending the rest of the day at leisure or enjoying a game drive in the park. Overnight stay at Camp Bastian (Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4: Mikumi National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a full-day game-viewing excursion in the park, complete with a packed lunch and mineral water. The highlight of today is the park’s principal feature, the Mikumi flood plain, along with the surrounding mountain ranges which are not only panoramic but thriving with encounters of lions, eland, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hartebeests, buffalos, wildebeest, and elephants among others. Mikumi elephants are mostly grazers and do not cause harm. The game drives will end at around 06:30 pm, after which you will return to your camp and retire. Overnight stay at Camp Bastian (Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5: Mikumi to Dar-es-salaam

Enjoy a sunrise game drive in Mikumi before bidding the park farewell. You may view a variety of bird species, and wildlife such as zebras, impalas, hippos, warthogs, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hartebeests, giraffes, etc. After the game drive, return to your camp and have breakfast after which you will depart for Dar-es-salaam. Your 5 Days Nyerere and Mikumi Safari has come to an end.
