6-day Tanzania self-drive safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your Self-drive safari will start in Arusha, where our driver will bring your 4×4 to brief you so that you start your 6-day Tanzania self-drive safari. Tarangire is famous for its diverse landscape with nine different vegetation zones. The park is mainly known for the abundance of ancient baobab trees (giant trees on the continent), which fill the landscape and dwarf the animals next to them.
The river in the park is home to wildlife from many bird species to lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and elephants. Tarangire National park is known for its concentration of elephants in the country and provides a chance to observe the interaction between elephant families. In the afternoon, we will still do a game drive before continuing to your camping site and setting up your 4×4 and roof tent for the night under the stars.
There is a possibility to upgrade your self-drive safari to sleep in a lodge if you wish.
Day 2: Game drive in Tarangire National Park.
You’ll have a full day of self-driving in the beautiful Tarangire National Park. You are free with your preferences since you will be on a self-drive safari in Tanzania. You will sleep again at the beautiful campsite in Tarangire or choose to stay in a hotel.
Day 3. Drive to Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast at the campsite, you will drive through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park for a full-day game drive. Although small (205 sq. miles), the park has breathtaking scenery. It is famous for its lush acacia forest, giant figs and mahogany trees, and a growing population of baboons and blue monkeys. This park also has giraffes, elephants, impalas and many buffaloes. The lake is also home to a large number of hippos.
Day 4. Self-drive in Lake Manyara National Park
Self-drive safari in Manyara Lake to see the famous tree-climbing lions inhabit the mahogany and acacia trees, and if you are lucky, you might spot them lazing on a tree branch. As you make your way out of the dense bushland onto the open grassy banks of the lake, you will see wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, and large buffalo in abundance, grazing away. The lake itself is home to a large number of birds thriving at the water’s edge. Over 400 species have been identified, and one of the highlights of today’s events is seeing the thousands of flamingos strolling around the lake.
Day 5. Self-drive safari to Ngorongoro Conservation area.
Drive to Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. As soon as you arrive in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will be amazed by the beauty around you. Even more so when you arrive at the crater’s edge and take in the fantastic view over one of the world’s natural wonders. The crater of this inactive volcano is approximately 3 million years old, 20km² in size, and the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world. Due to its natural borders, the wildlife in the crater is unique. The crater is home to Big Five and offers an excellent chance to spot the rare black rhino. Throw hyenas, zebras, buffaloes, and elephants into the mix, and you have the perfect canvas for a pretty awesome safari experience!
