With a total of 22 habituated families available for trekking and one dedicated to research, Uganda offers a unique and immersive experience for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike. Rushegura Gorilla Family
The Rushegura Gorilla Family, nestled in the serene Buhoma region of Uganda’s captivating Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, stands as a testament to the harmony that can exist between humans and wildlife. With a rich history of separation and resilience, this family has found a peaceful haven amidst the lush wilderness. In 2002, the Rushegura Gorilla Family branched off from the larger Habinyanja family, finding their new home at a place aptly named Rushegura. Led by the dominant silverback Mwirima, the family consisted of twelve individuals, including five females, at the time of separation. Through the years, Mwirima’s unwavering dedication to protect his family has seen them through numerous encounters with wild gorilla groups.
Initially, the family would occasionally venture into the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. However, they eventually settled within the boundaries of Bwindi National Park, establishing a permanent residence. Remarkably, the Rushegura Gorilla Family has fostered a peaceful coexistence with the nearby village, and they have been observed on several occasions visiting the gardens of the Gorilla Forest Camp. With time, the family has flourished, and their numbers have grown to a total of nineteen individuals, including the steadfast leadership of silverback Mwirima. Known for their calm demeanor, the Rushegura Gorilla Family offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness their harmonious interactions and observe their gentle nature.

Mubare Gorilla Family

Over time, the family faced hardships, including the loss of members through migration and conflicts with other gorilla groups.
In 2012, tragedy struck when a wild gorilla group attacked the Mubare Family, resulting in the loss of several females. Weakened and aged, Ruhondeza sought refuge in the neighboring community forest. Despite his diminished strength, the resilient silverback was closely monitored by Bwindi National Park researchers until his peaceful passing in June 2020. Ruhondeza’s dignified presence lives on through his final resting place near the park headquarters, where a gravestone commemorates his legacy. Ruhondeza, whose name translates to ‘sleepy fellow,’ was renowned for his gentle demeanor and laid-back leadership style. His longevity and the challenges he faced symbolize the enduring spirit of the Mubare Gorilla Family and their ability to adapt and survive.

Habinyanja Gorilla Family
The Habinyanja Gorilla Family, located in the picturesque Buhoma-Kahororo-Rubina region of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is a testament to the strength and adaptability of these remarkable creatures. With a rich history spanning several decades, the Habinyanja family offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the intricate dynamics of gorilla society. First opened for tourism in 1999, the Habinyanja Gorilla Family’s journey began in 1997 during the habituation process. Initially discovered near a swamp within the impenetrable forest, the group derived its name from the local Rukiga language, where “Habinyanja” means “a place with water.” The dominant silverback at the time, Mugurisi, led the family until his passing due to old age.
Following Mugurisi’s demise, two of his brothers, Mwirima and Rwansigazi, assumed joint leadership. However, their differing natures and preferences led to a peaceful separation, with Rwansigazi embarking on his own adventurous journey while Mwirima formed the Rushegura family. The Habinyanja Gorilla Family is currently led by silverback Makara, who took over from Rwansigazi. The family’s encounters with their counterparts, such as the Rushegura family, have been characterized by peaceful coexistence. However, in a tragic incident in June 2011, the sociable and friendly blackback named Mizano fell victim to poachers, marking the first recorded instance of a gorilla being killed by poachers since 1995. His loss serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing threats faced by these endangered animals.

Nkuringo Gorilla Family
Nestled in the scenic Nkuringo region of Uganda, the Nkuringo Gorilla Family captivates visitors with its breathtaking presence and unique history. The name “Nkuringo,” derived from the local Rukiga language, translates to “round hill,” the very location where this remarkable group was first discovered. Initially, the family faced challenges as they had a tendency to venture into nearby village communities, causing conflicts by consuming farm produce such as sweet potatoes and bananas. In response to local complaints and to protect both the gorillas and the interests of the community, the Nkuringo Gorilla Family underwent habituation for tourism purposes. This initiative not only safeguarded the family but also provided an opportunity for local communities to benefit from gorilla tourism revenue.
Led by the aging silverback Nkuringo, the family flourished until his passing in April 2008. Following his demise, two silverbacks, Rafiki and Safari, remained within the family. Eventually, leadership shifted to Nkuringo’s son, Safari. The family also celebrated the birth of twins, Muhozi and Katungi, to adult female Kwitonda. Sadly, Katungi passed away due to illness at the age of one-and-a-half years. The Nkuringo Gorilla Family offers a thrilling and rewarding experience for visitors. The challenging hike to reach them is undoubtedly worth the effort, as it provides a unique opportunity to witness the harmonious coexistence between humans and these majestic creatures. With a total of 19 members, including two silverbacks, the family has become a favorite among those who have tracked multiple gorilla groups.
Bitukura Gorilla Family
Nestled near the picturesque River Bitukura in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the Bitukura Gorilla Family has captured the hearts of visitors with its unique dynamics and remarkable history. This group’s name is derived from its initial sighting location, symbolizing the deep connection to its natural surroundings. Remarkably, the Bitukura Gorilla Family underwent an expedited habituation process, becoming ready for tourism in just 15 months. This exceptional timeline is attributed to the close bond between the Bitukura and Kyaguriro families, leading to frequent encounters with rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, facilitating the habituation process. Originally consisting of 24 members, the family has since decreased to 14 individuals, with some members joining other gorilla families over the years.
What sets the Bitukura Gorilla Family apart is its remarkable leadership structure. Although not the oldest silverback, Ndahura holds the position of dominant silverback, taking over from the retired leader, Karamuzi, who served for nearly four decades. Astonishingly, Ndahura carefully guards a newborn member that was welcomed into the family in 2013, adding to the joy and unity within the group.
Oruzogo Gorilla Family
Nestled in the scenic Ruhija region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the Oruzogo Gorilla Family has become a symbol of resilience and growth. Led by the dominant silverback Tibirikwata, this family has welcomed visitors since 2011, providing a glimpse into the captivating world of mountain gorillas. With a current group size of 25 individuals, including two impressive silverbacks, the Oruzogo Gorilla Family has flourished over the years, thanks in part to the joyous arrivals of newborns. In June 2011, Ntamurungi, a cherished female adult, gave birth, adding to the growing family.
Later that same year, in October, Musi, another adult female, brought another bundle of joy into the world. The following year, in March 2012, Kakoba, an adult female, astonished everyone by giving birth to twins, igniting an atmosphere of sheer delight within the gorilla family. The thriving Oruzogo Gorilla Family showcases the remarkable resilience and ability of these majestic creatures to adapt and prosper in their natural habitat. Visitors are privileged to witness the intimate bonds, playful interactions, and the nurturing nature of the group.
Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
Deep within the captivating Mgahinga National Park resides the unique and adventurous Nyakagezi Gorilla Family. As the only habituated group within this park, they offer a truly exclusive and remarkable gorilla trekking experience. Led by the esteemed dominant silverback, Mark, this family of ten individuals, including three impressive silverbacks, captivates visitors with their roaming spirit and strong bonds.
Mark, the ruling silverback, is known for his love of exploration, often leading the family across borders between Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. However, since November 2012, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family has settled within the Ugandan border, offering a stable and immersive encounter for trekkers. In May 2013, the family welcomed a precious addition—a newborn baby, further enhancing their close-knit community. Due to their past mobility, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has designated that gorilla trekking permits to visit the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family can only be obtained at the UWA headquarters within the national park. This measure ensures the safety and conservation of this remarkable gorilla family.
Kyaguriro Gorilla Family
Deep within the enchanting Ruhija region lies the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family, a fascinating group of fifteen individuals with two powerful silverbacks. While the habituation process for this family has been successfully completed, it remains a closely observed and studied group, not yet open for tourism activities. Conservationists, dedicated to the well-being and preservation of these majestic creatures, maintain a watchful eye on their progress. Previously under the leadership of the dominant silverback Zeus, the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family faced a dramatic turn of events. A contender gorilla named Rukina challenged Zeus, resulting in a fierce encounter that forced the elderly leader into exile. Tragically, Zeus eventually succumbed to the challenges of his solitary life and passed away.
Despite the loss of their former leader, the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family demonstrates remarkable resilience. With ongoing conservation efforts and close monitoring, this group serves as a valuable source of knowledge and insight into the behavior and dynamics of these incredible creatures. While currently not open for tourism, the Kyaguriro Gorilla Family symbolizes the delicate balance of power, the strength of unity, and the enduring spirit of these magnificent creatures in the heart of the Ruhija region.
