Nyakamwe Gorilla family
This gorilla family consists of 15 members including 3 silverbacks, 4 adult female gorillas, 2 sub adult females, 3 juveniles and 3 infants. The dominant silverback in the Nyakamwe family is called Nyakamwe.
Nyakamwe gorilla family is another gorilla family in Virunga national park which can be seen around the Bukima sector in Democratic Republic of Congo. This gorilla family consists of 15 members including 3 silverbacks, 4 adult female gorillas, 2 sub adult females, 3 juveniles and 3 infants. The dominant silverback in the Nyakamwe family is called Nyakamwe.
Nyakamwe the silverback split from his brother´s group which is the Humba group as a result of conflicts between the two. Many of the gorillas from the Humba group followed Nyakamwe leaving Humba with few individuals.
Visiting Nyakamwe gorilla family in Virunga national park
Gorilla trekking in Virunga national park can take place either in the dry season or in the rainy season. The best time for tourists to take part in the search for the gorillas including the Nyakamwe group is during the dry season. The dry season in Virunga national park is experienced around June to October. During this time the conditions for seeing the gorillas are favorable.
To visit the Nyakamwe gorilla family in Virunga national park, tourists are required to have gorilla permits which are issued to individuals above the age of 15 years. Each permit costs 450 USD for a gorilla trekking experience in Congo. The gorilla trek starts with a briefing at the park headquarters after which tourists and the ranger guides allocated to the group start the activity in Virunga national park. The search for gorillas can take over 6 hours or less but only 1 hour is spent with the gorillas once they are found in the forest.
During the 1 hour, tourists can take photos and videos of the gorillas and enjoy the interaction with the gorillas before returning to the park headquarters. Depending on when the gorilla trek ends, tourist can also engage in other activities around Virunga national park. Apart from the Nyakamwe group, other gorilla families to visit in Virunga national park include Kabirizi family, Humba family, Lulengo family, Rugendo family, Munyaga family, Mapuwa family, Wilulunga family, Baraka family and Bageni family.
