Virunga national park is home to 8 habituated gorilla families and they include the Kabirizi group, the Lulengo group, the Rugendo group, Munyaga group, Mapuwa group, Humba group and Bageni group. A gorilla permit to see the habituated gorilla families in Virunga national park costs 450 USD. This permit is issued to travelers above the age of 15 years who are permitted to take part in gorilla trekking.

The gorilla trekking process in Virunga national park starts with briefing done by the park officials at the park headquarters. During the briefing, tourists are informed about the rules of the gorilla trek as well as safety precautions. The search for the gorillas begins into the Virunga forest with the rangers and trackers and after finding the gorillas, one hour is spent interacting with them, taking photos and videos and watching the gorillas. After this experience, the tourists return to the park headquarters.
