Samburu NR is home to all three species of big cats (lions, cheetahs – commonly cheetahs – and leopards) and is also famous for its abundance of elephants and rare animal species such as Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (species of antelope). Numerous crocodiles live in the beautiful river that runs through the park. After our delightful safari day in the park,
Day 3: Sabache – Reteti – Ngurunit
After our breakfast, we depart for a fantastic drive as we begin to move away from civilization. For the next few days the off road routes in the desert and dirt roads will dominate! Our destination is the tiny and picturesque Ngurunit, a village at the foot of the Ndoto Mountains where we will arrive when the sun is about to hide behind them creating an idyllic atmosphere. Earlier we will visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, an amazing community-run project that has saved dozens of elephants. Overnight in a single or double tent at a campsite in Ngurunit (dinner and breakfast included).
Day 4: Ngurunit – Nachola
Morning awakening and the start of another wonderful day of exploring the magnificent Northern Kenya! Today we will head further north, to Baragoi, through an unlikely route along the impressive Milgis River, where we meet nomadic herders of the Rendille, Samburu and others. We will learn a lot about their way of life and enjoy an amazing landscape with the feeling that time has stopped. In the afternoon we will reach the village of Nachola inhabited by people of the Turkana tribe. We will spend the night under the starry African sky, at the beautiful, communal “Kalomudang” campsite (overnight in a single or double tent, dinner and breakfast included).
Day 5: Nachola
We start our day very early in the morning with a visit to the traditional Turkana settlement. Today we will get in touch with one of the most interesting tribes in Africa that still lives according to the traditional way. An incredible cultural experience that will shock you… Also, we will have the opportunity to wander around the area, get in touch with nature, listen to its sounds and colors and talk to the people who manage the hostel having a lot to share with us. Overnight at the camp (lunch, dinner and breakfast included)
Day 6: Nachola – Loiyangalani (Lake Turkana)
After another idyllic morning at camp, our Lake Turkana adventure begins! Words can hardly describe the drive to Lake Turkana, the largest permanent desert lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominating the far northern edge of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Turkana shimmers in the heart of an unreal landscape of volcanic boulders, cinder cones, black sand beaches and the world’s largest population of crocodiles in its verdant waters. Our destination is Loiyangalani, a tiny village on the eastern shore of the lake and meeting point of the big northern tribes, Turkana, Samburu, Gabbra and El Molo (overnight in single or double rooms in guesthouse, dinner and breakfast).
Day 7: Lake Turkana
After our breakfast at the guesthouse, we will board a wooden boat for a unique ride on the lake. Overnight at the same guesthouse in Loiyangalani (dinner and breakfast).
Day 8: Loiyangalani – Karare
Morning wake up and departure from Lake Turkana with today’s final destination Karare, a village in Marsabit province. Our route will be exciting and eerie as we cross hundreds of kilometers through vast expanses of desert. Spiny desert plants and flowers, golden red sand and rock formations and people in their traditional costumes make up the images we will encounter passing through the villages of Kargi and Korr.
