5-Days Rwanda Birding Tour Overview

Our 5-Days Rwanda birding Tour is designed for those who have less time in Rwanda but want to meet some of the rare species that call Rwanda a home. Birdwatching in Rwanda is usually overshadowed by other activities like Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest. This tour will take you to Akagera National Park home to over 490 bird species with a significant number of the Albertine Rift Endemic species.

Expect to encounter a wide range of bird species that includes the Red-faced Barbet, Papyrus Gonolek, White-headed, Broad-tailed Warblers, Miombo Wren-Warblers and many more.

Day 1: Welcome to Rwanda

Welcome to Rwanda the land of a thousand hills. Rwanda is a small country but definitely offers one of the best breathtaking sceneries in the region thanks to her endless rolling green hill that you will surely notice while flying over to Kigali international airport.

Our guide will be at the airport waiting for you and to take you to your hotel in a beautiful leafy part of Kigali city. Your birding tour in Rwanda can actually starts right at the hotel since many birds tend to come over to the hotel

Day 2: Bird Watching in Rwanda’s Nyabarongo and Nyarutarama

Today we shall wake up very early to go to Nyabarongo for birdwatching. This protected area is approximately 142 km2 and its nestled in the South East of Rwanda. The wetlands here are fed by Nyabarongo river waters that is also fed by the Nile. Some of the the birds here includes the Papyrus Canary, Carruthers’s Cisticola, White-winged Scrub-warbler, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Sharpe’s Pied-babbler, White-collared Oliveback, Northern Brown-throated Weaver and in the afternoon, we shall be bird watching at Nyarutarama lake in Kigali.

Day 3 & 4 : Afternoon Bird watching in Akagera National Park.

Very few people actually know that you can go for a safari in Rwanda. Today you will be able to experience a Big 5 safari alongside birding in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park. The park is situated Northeastern Rwanda covering an area of 2500 Km2 of savannah grasslands, swamps and marshes. Akagera National Park is home to a variety of bird species and wildlife.

During your game drive in Akagera National Park, you will definitely have a chance to see some of the 490 bird species that have been recorded here. To add cherry on top, go for that afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema and you will easily build a good bird list.

Some of the birds to lookout for include African Starling is highly sought after by many visitors of Akagera, Grey-crowned Cranes, White-collared Oliveback, Northern Brown throated Weaver, Papyrus Gonolek, and White-Winged Swamp Warbler, Carruthers’s Cisticola

5-Days Rwanda Birding Tour

Day 5: Bugesera birding.

Today we shall leave early moring from our lodge and drive to Busegera a paradise for birds. Busegera is located about an hour away from Kigali and its home to about 600 bird species in its six birding sites like Rumira and Mbuganzeri bay. After an awesome time here, we shall continue to Kigali for the flight back home or to the next destination.

If you have time today, your guide can take you for a city tour in Kigali where you can visit some interesting historical features and the iconic Kigali genocide memorial Centre. This will mark the end of your 5-Days Rwanda Birding Tour If you have a late night flight today, please let us know so that we book a day room for you at your own additional fee.
