15 Days Kenya self-drive safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kenya

Your expedition begins as you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. A warm welcome awaits you from our dedicated Laba Africa Expeditions representative, who will be ready to assist you throughout your journey. They will ensure that your 4×4 self-drive car is prepared and provide you with a comprehensive briefing on its usage, ensuring you feel confident and ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After a delightful breakfast, hop into your 4×4 and drive towards Nanyuki, with a brief stop at the equator line for some memorable photos. Your destination is Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where you will check in at the camp and enjoy a delectable lunch. Situated on the equator, west of Nanyuki and nestled between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is renowned for its significant black rhino sanctuary, home to over 100 black rhinos. It is also the sanctuary for the last three remaining Northern white rhinos on Earth. Immerse yourself in the wonders of the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, offering a haven for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. This is the only place in Kenya where you can witness these remarkable creatures. The Conservancy is home to the iconic “Big Five” as well as a diverse array of other African wildlife. Spend the night at a campsite, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Day 3: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Dedicate a full day to exploring the captivating Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Embark on an early morning and late afternoon self-drive game drive, and keep an eye out for elephants, giraffes, and a variety of plains game near the camp’s bustling waterholes. Let the wildlife sightings captivate your senses as you create unforgettable memories in this remarkable sanctuary.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Lake Nakuru National Park

Bid farewell to Ol Pejeta Conservancy as you depart for Lake Nakuru National Park. Arrive in time for a satisfying lunch and indulge in an exhilarating self-drive game drive in the afternoon. Lake Nakuru is famous for its mesmerizing flocks of flamingos, hosting approximately 400 other bird species. The park is also home to a rich variety of animals, including Rothschild’s giraffes, black and white rhinos, waterbucks, lions, buffalos, leopards, baboons, and numerous plains game. Immerse yourself in the beauty of this diverse ecosystem.

Day 5-6: Lake Nakuru National Park - Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, continue your self-drive journey along the picturesque floor of the Rift Valley, heading towards the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive at the camp around 1pm and settle in before embarking on an afternoon self-drive safari game drive. Witness the vastness of this game-filled reserve, renowned for its abundant wildlife. Spend the following day fully immersed in the park, as you seek out the iconic Big Five and marvel at the astonishing variety of over 450 animal species. Consider adding an extraordinary hot air balloon safari at an additional cost, where you can admire the sweeping landscapes from above. Don’t miss the chance to visit a local Maasai village and learn about their rich culture and customs.

Day 7: Self-drive from Masai Mara National Reserve to Lake Naivasha

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before driving to Lake Naivasha, the highest and purest of the Great Rift Valley lakes. This picturesque area is a haven for birdlife, boasting species such as pelicans, fish eagles, and cormorants. Encounter other fascinating animals like hippos, zebras, antelopes, and Colobus monkeys. You may choose to embark on an optional boat ride to observe hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles, and other wildlife (additional cost applies). Rest and recharge at Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge, where you will be provided with full-board accommodation.

Day 8: Lake Naivasha - Amboseli National Park

After a fulfilling breakfast, drive to Amboseli National Park, famous for its breathtaking scenery adorned with the majestic snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and enjoy a short rest. In the afternoon, set out on a game drive in search of popular residents such as zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and hippos, all against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 9: Self-drive in Amboseli National Park

Start your day with an early breakfast followed by a morning game drive in Amboseli National Park. Witness the impressive herds of elephants and behold the grandeur of Mount Kilimanjaro. Visit Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the park, with its swamps hosting elephants, buffalos, hippos, and various waterfowls. In the afternoon, continue your game drive and consider an optional visit to a Maasai village to gain insights into their vibrant culture (additional cost applies). Spend the night at a campsite or lodge, surrounded by the captivating ambiance of the park.

Day 10: Self-drive from Amboseli National Park to Tsavo West National Park

Enjoy an early morning game drive before returning to your lodge for a satisfying breakfast. Afterward, bid farewell to Amboseli as you embark on a self-drive journey to Tsavo West National Park, which takes less than 3 hours. Marvel at the sight of the Mzima Springs, where fifty million gallons of crystal-clear water gush out from beneath parched lava rock. Take the opportunity to visit the springs, where hippos, fish, crocodiles, and monkeys can be spotted. Continue to your lodge for check-in and lunch. Tsavo West offers magnificent game viewing opportunities, with the chance to encounter elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and buffalos.

Day 11: Tsavo West National Park – Diani Beach, Mombasa

Have delicious breakfast before driving to Mombasa. Cross the ferry into the serene South Coast, where the sun, sand, and sea eagerly await your arrival. Check into the luxurious Pinewood Beach Resort & Spa, nestled along the beautiful white sandy shores of the Indian Ocean in Diani Beach. This beachfront haven combines traditional Swahili and Arabic architecture, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and swaying coconut palms. You will spend the next five nights here, enjoying leisurely days on the beach. Choose to stay at a lodge or set up camp in a campsite near the beach.

Day 12-14: Diani Beach

Savor three days of leisure, basking in the beauty of Diani Beach. The resort offers a wide range of activities, including swimming, snorkeling, diving with the PADI diving school, nature walks, tennis, volleyball, squash, fitness center, pool games, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, Petanque, table tennis, water aerobics, windsurfing, pool tables, and bird watching. Nearby attractions include the Wasini/Kisite Island Marine National Park, an 18-hole golf course, shops, supermarkets, casinos, and nightclubs. Enjoy dinners and relax at the Swahili Beach Resort, where you will be treated to a half-board meal plan.

Day 15: Fly back to Nairobi and leave the 4x4 in Diani

After a rejuvenating time at Diani Beach, it’s time to bid farewell to this coastal paradise. Fly back to Nairobi, leaving the 4×4 with a Laba Africa Expeditions driver in Diani ensure its safe return to Nairobi. There is a fee for this.. This marks the end of your remarkable 15-day self-drive safari in Kenya, filled with unforgettable wildlife encounters, stunning landscapes, and blissful beach moments.
