Gorillas & wildlife safaris in Uganda

Uganda may not have as many big animals as its counterparts Kenya and Tanzania but it makes up for it with the world’s rarest and most beautiful forest primates allowing visitors come see them plus the reptiles, savannah mammals, amphibians, birds and insects. As you tour the various parks, you will have the opportunity to see some of the world’s most incredible specimens. The new york times named the country as one of the top 52 places to visit because of its diversity.

Uganda was named one of the top 10 travel destinations and 50 lifetime places by the national geographic society. Are you intrigued by this? Read on for an over view of some of the most scenic locations in Uganda that you must see during your safari vacation.

Bwindi forest national park.

The Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, a popular Uganda safari destination, is situated in southwestern Uganda and it’s known for its dense vegetation. Every day vegetation must be cut by ranger guides to allow trackers access where the gorillas nested the night before the famous gorilla trekking adventure. It’s a true African jungle with sun drops falling through the dense forest cover giving you the feeling of being in paradise, Bwindi impenetrable forest was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in1994 due to its rich diversity of flora and fauna as well as the fact that it is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park is 321 square kilometers in size and is entirely forested, with some areas covered in bamboo and shrubs. The forest is located in a series of steep slick valleys with ridges and hilltops. Because of the dense canopy, the weather in Bwindi is chilly, so carry on some warm clothing for the evenings and long sleeved shirts and trousers for trekking. Anyone interested in seeing gorillas in the wild or birding as well as butterfly and shrub search must be in good health and physical condition in order to be able to go up and down the terrain on this Ugandan safari. It is located between 1160m and 2607m above sea level.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari.

Queen Elizabeth national park is the most visited and definitely the most scenic game park in the Ugandan country. This national park comprises many habitats inclusive of savanna grassland with a variety of tree species, vast plains, tropical rain forests, swamps and volcanic attractions such as volcanic cones and deep sparkling crater lakes. Large game viewing, chimp trekking in the kyambura gorge, bird watching on the water stretch famously known as Kazinga channel and seeing the rare tree climbing lions in ishasha are some of the activities to do in Queen Elizabeth national park.  So much diversity of habitats here keep a wide range of species like  a number of reptiles, a hundred different mammals and about 600 bird species making it a must see for birders. Its also a home to primate species like baboons, red tailed monkeys and chimpanzees. Some of the park trails pass through large herds of Uganda kob mating grounds. Big herds of hippo, elephants, leopards not forgetting the small mammals such as impalas, warthogs, giant forest hogs, topis, dikdiks and hyenas call this park home.

Kazinga channel boat safari.

This 32km long Kazinga channel connects lake Edward and lake George. It is an extra ordinary location to experience nature at its best in Queen Elizabeth park. It has one of the world biggest concentration of hippos and different crocodiles. It also has a wide range of animals that come to refresh in the channel waters. Common Ugandan wildlife can be spotted here such as elephants, antelopes, and bufalos from the nearby savannah during the boat safari or at some lodges that are located near the channel drinking and looking for fresh grass along the banks. Also for birders, 60 different species of birds can be seen including great white, pink beaked pelicans, shoebill stork, yellow billed storks, grey headed heron, great blue heron, long tailed cormorants among others.

Tanzania African safari

The African big 5 Safari , Great migration and tropical beaches.

Tanzania is gifted in all bits as safaris can be found almost anywhere. So many years now as safari has become part of the daily way of life in East Africa’s second largest state. Very few African safari destinations can beat Tanzania in its dramatic landscapes and wildlife diversity. From the intimate paradise beaches and coral reefs of Zanzibar to the savannah grasslands of Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater. You can never run out of choice from the off beaten path gems to trek chimps in the Mahale and Rubondo rainforests thereafter head to the isolated from crowd’s game drive in the breathtaking wild and remarkable scenery of Nyerere (previously Selous) and Ruaha park.

Here is to why you need to hit that Tanzania safari tour from sensational all year game viewing to the wildebeest migration and tropical beach finale. How relaxing!

Witness the great African Wildlife migration safari

Of all the wildlife encounters, there is no place that beats the annual wildlife migration. It is a mind blowing display of nature at its most spectacular and it’s the focal point for most first timers in Tanzania safari itineraries.  One of the planets large mass terrestrial animal movements of about 2million wildebeest, antelopes and zebras are killed by predators as they migrate through the Serengeti Mara ecosystem in search of fresh pastures. The herds can be seen from space as they are so huge and marvel like, making this event extra ordinary on the planet among animal movements.

The Serengeti national park, Tanzania’s jewel conservation area hosts the majority of the migration. Mobile camps move on a daily to keep up with the herds as possible while some lodging options provide easy access to river crossings. You can get a well-located safari camp between June and October (River crossing season). For the front row seat lovers at the incredible river crossings, you have to book your safari at least a year in advance. Alternatively go when there are fewer tourists during the birth times and grazing moments of the animals across the plains which is just as impressive and enjoyable with less people congestion. Contact one of our African safari experts on the best trip times to coincide with the animal migrations.

Encounter the African big five in Ngorongoro crater.

A giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2.5million years ago, leading to the formation of the Ngorongoro crater a now UNESCO world heritage and protected ecosystem that harbors the big 5.the crater’s floor is about 260 square kilometers in size and approximately 600metres deep (100 square miles) with over 30000 animals living in its surprisingly diverse habitats.

In Ngorongoro, you will encounter;

  • Some of Africa’s large mammal populations
  • One of Africa’s seven natural wonders
  • The most reliable big 5 sightings in the East African Safari in Tanzania

Go off the beaten path African wildlife safari in Tanzania

For adrenaline adventurous safari lovers and those who have already visited the Northern Tanzania well known destinations, you need to check out Tanzania’s lesser known parks and reserves as well. Be among those to find the undiscovered safari spots, swamps, savannah, rainforests and lakes that offer extra ordinary wildlife encounters far away from crowds. So many activities which are prohibited in national parks like Serengeti such as fishing, walking, boating safaris, off roading and night safaris can be enjoyed here.

Ruaha national park, a Tanzania well-kept secret is home to the country’s largest elephant population. Another is one of Africa’s most important wild dog sanctuaries (Selous game reserve). Not forgetting chimpanzee trekking, one of Tanzania’s most unique African wildlife safaris that can be done in the Mahale mountains or Rubondo island.
